The Multimedia Audio Controller is part of the sound drivers. The Dell downloads show a SoundBlaster Audigy 2ZS sound card and if you got it. Along with what Chris posted, the first thing do you have a separate sound card or do you have the basic Integrated (on the motherboard) audio. The Mutltimedia Audio Controller is part of the sound drivers. Normally, when the correct sound drivers are installed this problem is solved.

After completing the driver update, I started getting good sound. I too am a user. I believe the problem was that my Creative soundblaster card was conflicting with another sound card, "SoundMax Integrated Digital Audio".
When disable this this card, the soundblaster work fine. When enable it, I get no sound. If you are installed Windows 7, at first you will not have the sound driver BUT no need to worry when you install the windows 7 updates, it will automatically locate and install your sound drivers.

To head off a question that gets asked a lot - yes I did install the chipset drivers. Power off. Open the case cover and remove the sound card.
Tell us the part number and the SB0 number on the card.
Along with what Chris posted, the first thing do you have a separate sound card or do you have the basic Integrated on the motherboard audio? Where is the speaker connections located? If the motherboard chipset drivers were skipped you won't be able to install any sound drivers.

Cakewalk by BandLab and Studio One 4. No joy. The problem has to be with the "Multimedia Audio Controller". I'm ready to sacrifice a chicken at midnight if it will get the job done.
